The latest chapter in the science of sound

Making sound waves in the analog versus digital debate, Dommus releases his thesis to the critical masses.

Forget about the latest audio compression format or MP3 storage device and rewind to the only debate worth having: CD vs Vinyl, a debate that has been flipped, reversed, rehashed and rendered in audio-visual glory.

Dommus’ new film series Vinyl v CD, out January 2007, puts a different spin on an old turntable, taking a different stance and proving, once again, that the debate lives on. Dommus finally asks the question; can CD and Vinyl work in harmony?

This stylistic representation livens up the debate and releases a debut that is set to position Dommus as an intensely focused, conceptual, experimental composer. Dommus has the knack of combining video, with experimental beats, in a manner that is plausible to the ‘golden ears’ amongst us.

Taking the discourse and deconstructing it, Dommus has produced a satirical study of the two audio formats. Turning composition on its head, Dommus uses his subjects (vinyl or compact discs) as noisemakers in their raw state and then manipulates them into audio-visual patterns.

Dommus’ work may be fully appreciated by watching all three films in succession. The first and second can be seen in parallel, depicting the media of Vinyl and CD, with an interpretation of harmony seamlessly provided in the third.
